Karwa Chauth Makeup in Delhi: How to Look Fresh From Sargi to Moonrise

Karwa Chauth makeup in Delhi with a woman in a red outfit by PD’s Beauty Salon.

Quick Summary:

Karwa Chauth makeup has a harder job than almost any party look. It has to last through a full day of fasting, an evening puja and moonrise photos, on skin that hasn’t had a sip of water since sargi. In this guide, I share how we plan Karwa Chauth makeup at PD’s Beauty Salon in Rohini: how to prep your skin in the week before, why a lighter base lasts longer on a fasting day, which colours look best in evening light, and when to book so you’re not rushing before puja.

Every year, a few days before Karwa Chauth, my phone starts buzzing with the same message. “Didi, slot milega na?”

And every year, I see the same thing. A woman spends weeks choosing the perfect red saree — and then her makeup looks tired by the time the moon comes out. Not because the makeup was bad. Because nobody planned it for a fasting day.

This year Karwa Chauth falls on Wednesday, 28 October, so you still have time to plan it properly. Let me tell you how we do it at the salon.

Why Karwa Chauth Makeup Is Different From Regular Party Makeup

On a normal party day, you eat, you drink water, and your skin stays hydrated from the inside. On Karwa Chauth, most of my clients keep a nirjala vrat — no food, no water, from sargi before sunrise until they see the moon.

By evening, the skin is dehydrated. Dehydrated skin drinks up the moisture from your foundation, so the base looks patchy around the nose and lips — while the forehead often gets oily to compensate. Shine in some places, cracking in others.

Then there’s the timing. Puja usually happens in the early evening, and moonrise in Delhi is usually around 8 PM (check your family’s panchang for the exact time). That means your makeup needs to look good for three to four hours, through the puja, the waiting, the moon sighting through the chhalni, and the photos after.

So the goal is not “full glam.” The goal is a look that stays fresh for hours on skin that’s running on empty.

The Week Before: Prep Your Skin, Not Just Your Outfit

The best Karwa Chauth makeup starts a week before the day itself.

If you want a facial, book it five to seven days before — not the day before. A Hydrafacial is my first suggestion for most clients at this time of year, because it deep-cleans and hydrates at the same time, and there’s no redness or downtime. I’ve written about what a Hydrafacial actually does for your skin if you want the full picture. If your skin is oily or you’ve been dealing with breakouts from Delhi’s October pollution, an ozone facial is a better fit.

Don’t forget your hands — they’re in every photo, holding the thali, the diya, the chhalni. A manicure two or three days before keeps your nails and cuticles neat.

And if your hair has been feeling dry and dull after the monsoon, a hair spa a few days before helps it sit better and shine in photos.

One thing I always tell clients: don’t try a new skincare product, peel or bleach in the last week. Karwa Chauth is not the day to find out your skin reacts to something.

Sargi Morning: What You Do at 4 AM Shows Up at 7 PM

This sounds funny, but your sargi plate affects your makeup.

Your sargi is your last chance to hydrate. Water-rich foods — fruits, coconut water, a glass of milk or lassi — help your skin hold up through the day. Very salty or fried food at sargi can leave your face puffy by the afternoon, which shows up most around the eyes.

During the day, don’t skip your moisturiser just because you’ll get your makeup done later. Apply a good moisturiser in the morning and again around noon. Skin that’s been moisturised through the day takes makeup much better in the evening.

The Base: Less Product, More Staying Power

Here’s the mistake I see most often: too much foundation. On a fasting day, a heavy base will crack and settle into fine lines faster than usual.

What we do at the salon is simple. We hydrate the skin well first with a primer that holds moisture, then use a lighter layer of foundation and build coverage only where it’s needed — under the eyes, around the nose, on any spots. Powder is kept to the T-zone. A good setting spray finishes it so the base doesn’t slide as the evening goes on.

Some clients ask for HD makeup, especially for their first Karwa Chauth after marriage, when there’ll be lots of photos. It gives a smoother, camera-ready finish but still needs the same light hand. I’ve explained the difference between Airbrush vs HD Makeup.

Eyes, Lips and That Red Saree

Karwa Chauth is a traditional occasion, and most women wear red, maroon or deep pink. Your makeup should support your outfit, not compete with it.

For the eyes, I prefer warm tones — soft bronze, copper, a touch of gold shimmer on the lid. They glow beautifully under diya light and the warm yellow lights of an evening puja. Kajal and eyeliner should be waterproof, because Karwa Chauth evenings can get emotional. I’ve seen enough happy tears at moonrise to know.

For lips, a long-wear lipstick in a shade close to your saree works best. The good news is that since you’re not eating or drinking until moonrise, your lipstick actually stays put better than on any other festive day. Just carry the shade with you for one touch-up before the moon sighting.

If your jewellery is heavy, keep the makeup slightly softer so the overall look doesn’t feel overdone.

Timing Your Salon Appointment on Karwa Chauth

This is where most people go wrong. Everyone wants a slot between 3 and 5 PM on the day, and so does everyone else in Rohini.

My honest advice: book your slot at least a week in advance. Ask for a time that finishes roughly an hour before your family’s puja, so you’re not rushing, and you have time to settle, take a few photos, and relax.

Getting your makeup done too early — say at noon — means it has to last eight hours on a fasting face. Too late, and you’ll be stressed going into the puja. Mid-afternoon is usually the sweet spot.

Our party makeup starts at ₹1,999, and we’re open 10 AM to 8 PM, all seven days, including the festival itself. If you’ve already booked HD or airbrush makeup with us for another function, let us know, and we’ll plan your Karwa Chauth look to match.

Doing Your Own Makeup? Keep These in Your Bag

Many women prefer to get ready at home, and that’s completely fine. If you’re doing your own makeup, here’s what I’d keep in your bag for the evening: blotting papers for shine, a small compact, your lipstick, a cotton bud for any smudged kajal, and a mini setting spray.

And if you’ve always wanted to do your own festive makeup properly instead of guessing, our Self Makeup Course teaches exactly this — skin prep, base, eyes and party looks — in six classes, with a certificate at the end. You can see the details on our courses page.

“Karwa Chauth is one of the few days in the year when a woman gives so much and asks for so little. The least we can do is make sure she feels beautiful while she waits for the moon.”

FAQs

When should I get my makeup done on Karwa Chauth?
Mid-afternoon is usually best. Aim for your makeup to finish about an hour before your family’s puja time. This gives you time to settle in without your makeup having to last through the whole fasting day.

How do I stop my makeup from looking dry on Karwa Chauth?
Hydrate well at sargi, moisturise your skin in the morning and again around noon, and keep your foundation light. A hydrating primer and a setting spray make a big difference on a fasting day.

What colours suit Karwa Chauth makeup?
Warm tones work best with red and maroon outfits. Think bronze, copper and soft gold on the eyes, and a long-wear lipstick close to your saree’s shade.

How much does Karwa Chauth makeup cost at PD’s Beauty Salon?

Our party makeup starts at ₹1,999. The final price depends on the look and finish you choose. WhatsApp us for details.

Is PD’s Beauty Salon open on Karwa Chauth?
Yes. Both our Rohini branches, Sector 7 and Sector 8, are open from 10 AM to 8 PM, all seven days, including festival days. Book early, because afternoon slots fill up first.
